Background of the Study
Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide, with an increasing prevalence due to aging populations, hypertension, diabetes, and lifestyle-related risk factors (World Stroke Organization, 2023). In Nigeria, stroke remains a significant public health challenge, contributing to high morbidity and mortality rates due to delayed treatment, inadequate rehabilitation services, and limited access to quality care (Okon et al., 2024).
Nurses play a vital role in stroke care, from emergency management to long-term rehabilitation. Their responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, administering medications, assisting with mobility and feeding, and providing patient and family education on stroke recovery (Adebayo & Salisu, 2023). At Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, nurses are at the frontline of stroke management, working alongside physicians and physiotherapists to improve patient outcomes. However, concerns about the quality of nursing care, adherence to clinical guidelines, and patient recovery rates highlight the need for a thorough assessment of nursing interventions in stroke care.
Studies suggest that timely and well-coordinated nursing care can significantly reduce stroke-related complications and improve patient recovery (Aliyu et al., 2024). However, factors such as inadequate staffing, poor knowledge of stroke management protocols, and limited rehabilitation services may compromise the quality of care provided to stroke patients (Umar & Okonkwo, 2023). This study aims to assess the quality of nursing care for stroke patients at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, identifying gaps and recommending improvements for better patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the critical role of nurses in stroke management, there is limited research on the quality of nursing care provided to stroke patients in Nigerian healthcare facilities. Many stroke patients suffer from preventable complications such as infections, pressure ulcers, and mobility impairments due to inadequate nursing care and delayed interventions (Eze & Okeke, 2024).
At Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, factors such as nurse workload, training gaps, and resource limitations may affect the quality of care provided to stroke patients. Additionally, the extent to which nurses adhere to evidence-based stroke management guidelines remains unclear (Adebayo et al., 2024). This study seeks to assess the quality of nursing care delivered to stroke patients, examining adherence to best practices, patient outcomes, and challenges faced by nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses providing stroke care at Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kebbi, assessing their adherence to clinical guidelines and patient recovery outcomes. Limitations may include variations in stroke severity among patients, self-reported biases, and constraints in tracking long-term rehabilitation outcomes.
